Paying It Forward
Contributions Not Required, But Encouraged
This Substack will remain free because I want to reach as many people as possible. People have voluntarily contributed about $1,000 over the last nine months, for which I am grateful. I use the money that comes in to pay younger writers and researchers — give them a stipend if they have written an article for free, put up some money so a more experienced researcher can hire them to do a stint of work, etc. It’s small but meaningful. I am also going to devote my speaking and article fees for the same purpose.
SO, if you are inclined to make a voluntary contribution at any level — $5, $50, $500 (I know, I know, that’s pushing it — you could go to an overpriced Broadway play for that amount!) — know that it will be put to good use, helping encourage the amazing generation of writers, researchers and organizers rising up as I write these words, in a world where jobs in journalism and the nonprofit sector doing what one believes are in scarce supply. I promise not to nudge too often, but just wanted you to know that the contributions I have received thus far are going to good use, and any additional funds will likewise be used to seed the next generation of activists, advocates, and writers, even if in a small way. Thank you for taking this ride with me, and tolerating my whims and foibles!

Hi Bill. I am a paying subscriber. But did you read my own lastest Substack post? About why I am winding it down here? I won't be renewing paid subscriptions, and I invite all to read me for free. Read my last post to find out why!
